Field Application Scientist - Cell Biology

LOCATION
Durham, NC
STATUS
Full-Time

About Ramona:

High-throughput optical microscopy is transforming the science of modern biology — from genetics to drug discovery to synthetic biology. It is rapidly improving efficiency and opening up new possibilities across a wide range of applications.

But scientists today are fundamentally constrained by the limited perspective of traditional microscopes. As field-of-view increases, resolution decreases. Yet modern biology requires an ability to capture precise data across larger areas and at multiple points in time to understand dynamic systems and reduce costs by accelerating tedious workflows.

At Ramona, we've reimagined microscopy for the modern researcher. Our Multi-Camera Array Microscope (MCAM™) is the first of its kind to offer video-speed capture of cellular detail across an entire well plate. By equipping scientists with unprecedented speed, precision, and insight, we’re on a mission to advance human health and insight through computational microscopy.

Our foundation is built upon five guiding principles:

  • We empower exploration by embracing challenges and nurturing curiosity.
  • We pursue understanding to deliver solutions that are transformative and elegantly simple.
  • We drive innovation, seeking novel approaches to anticipate the challenges of cutting-edge research.
  • We trust in accountability, maintaining transparency and ownership in all we do.
  • We thrive on collaboration, valuing diverse perspectives to achieve shared goals.

Our startup environment is fast-paced and constantly evolving. Success here is driven by a willingness to embrace new challenges and make a tangible impact on our overall success. Our team members thrive on the edge of innovation, wearing multiple hats and coming up with creative solutions to drive growth. For those who excel in dynamic, ever-changing environments and are ready to contribute wherever needed, Ramona offers numerous opportunities for professional growth. However, if you prefer a more structured or predictable work environment, Ramona's fast-paced environment might not be the best fit. We’re looking for team members who are eager to push boundaries and shape the future of microscopy and scientific research.

The Role:

We are looking for a Field Application Scientist or Engineer who is eager to dive into a variety of projects across the company. This position is ideal for somebody who is a people person who loves technology - proactive, versatile, eager to share their knowledge with others outside the company, and keen to make an immediate impact in a dynamic startup environment. The daily responsibilities find themselves at the intersection of basic biology, microscopy, data analysis, and engineering. Your primary responsibility will be to act as a technical liaison between the customer and Ramona, working closely with Sales, to ensure that customers fully understand the technologies, and feel comfortable using it. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to interact with our internal development team to discuss requested features, improvements to workflows, and attempt in house demonstrations of new protocols to ensure the longevity of our product line as our customers uncover new perspectives thanks to our tools.

The primary users you will support are using our tools in high throughput microscopy settings where parallelized experiments are conducted on human cancer models in multi-well plates using 2D and 3D cell cultures.

Responsibilities:

  • System installations, trainings, and demonstrations with customers: When installing a new system with end users, we often provide them with 1-2 days of on-site training. Your acquired expertise of our technology along with knowledge of their biology will enable you to teach them how to make the most of their new microscopes! Your responsibility includes being prepared on both the biology side, and the MCAM's hardware and software to ensure they feel confident in using the system after the installation is over. Likewise, you will be asked to prepare training sessions and demonstrations for users that may be interested in learning how the MCAM may accelerate their workflows.
  • Customer success: Your day-to-day involves helping scientists make better use of our technology by helping them troubleshoot their workflows and understanding their pain points surrounding our technology. If something is stopping them from making the most of our technology we want to know why! More often than not, it may be related to a new biology experiment they are trying to execute. You should be comfortable jumping into their science and helping them out of the problem.
  • Workflow development: Powered by the knowledge of our customer's common pitfalls using our microscopes, you'll work with the Ramona Engineering Team to develop best practices that we would publish to our website to help all our users learn and optimize their usage of the MCAM and related software.
  • Technical Documentation: You will assist and write technical documentation that will be used by our customers in your absence to learn how to optimize our tools for their workflows.
  • Marketing Material: You will be assisting the marketing team in ensuring the accuracy of the scientific claims in so far as their applicability to our end users.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Masters degree in biological sciences, or biomedical engineering with 3+ years of experience in a similar role.
    • PhD in Biological Sciences,  Biomedical Engineering or similar is an asset but not required.
  • Familiarity with cancer models and cell culture techniques is a must.
  • Proficiency in wet laboratory skills.
  • Proficiency in image analysis software such as  ImageJ, Imaris, Arivis, or Aivia.
  • Highly adaptable and able to support users in maximizing the impact of our technology on their science.
  • Comfortable with sample preparation and imaging optimization as it pertains to a variety of microscopy imaging setups.
  • Exhibits strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proactive, with a keen interest in learning about aspects of microscopy and its application to biology workflows.
  • Has a positive attitude and thrives in a collaborative startup environment.
  • Comfortable working with hands and tools; taking things apart to learn how they work and putting them back together. You may be asked to perform small repairs at the end user site!
  • Comfortable with data analysis tools commonly used in microscopy including Excel, GraphPad, Prism, Python, Matlab.

Why Ramona?

  • Competitive salary and benefits, including equity options.
